The online consultation with the provider is considered telemedicine and is covered by most medical insurance policies. Typically, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Cigna, and United Healthcare now cover telemedicine visits. However, coverage is also dependent on the type of plan you have with your insurance carrier.
Other insurance companies are poised to cover telemedicine so check with your carrier. Currently, Medicare only covers this service for residents of Hawaii and Alaska.
Your provider cannot immediately determine if your insurance covers your online visit. If it is covered, you will be reimbursed for the difference between your online payment and your insurance co-payment.
